Reedy Branch History
Reedy Branch Baptist Church was organized under the pastorate of Rev. J.W. Blanks in 1881. The church worshipped in the original building until 1882, when a survey was made for the erection of a larger church building. During the construction, the congregation worshipped under a brush arbor. The church joined The Burnt Swamp Baptist Association on November 3, 1891.
The church flourished, adding an addition to the sanctuary. During 1928-1940, the Sunday School was graded and classrooms added, making the third addition to the building erected in 1882.
During the fall of 1951 a sum of $4,000 was raised and the walls of the new building erected and was completed in 1952, a block structure. William R. Oxendine was in charge of construction and made use of much free labor and materials.
During 1967-68, H. L. Builders Construction Company, at a cost of $15,000, erected a Fellowship Hall. In the beginning of 1973 renovation of the church facility was begun, brick veneering the entire structure, constructing a new top and steeple, and changing all windows. The remodeling was done by H&L Builders and increased the value of the church plan to about $150,000.
A Dedication Service, under the direction of the pastor, Rev. C. W. Maynor, was held on Sunday, July 1, 1973. Rev. C. E. Locklear, the only living former pastor of Reedy Branch, delivered the Dedication sermon; and Rev. Tony E. Brewington, Director of Missions for Burnt Swamp Baptist Association, gave the Cornerstone-Laying Address.
Over the next 12 years Reedy Branch went through several changes. The church made major renovations in 1974, with a baptismal pool and 1976 adding central heat and air conditioning in the classrooms. A utility building was constructed and carpet was put in the sanctuary along with padding of the pews and new hymnbooks in 1986.
In November 1990 the foundation was laid for the new educational building. The cost was approximately $150,000, with a total facility value of about $500,000. In 1992 the Brooks family assisted children with their college education by establishing the Mickey Brooks scholarship fund. The parking lots were also paved in 1992. In the years 1993, 1996, and 1998 the church purchased additional properties totaling in 11 acres, for future growth. A new 80–parking space parking lot was added in 1998. During 2002 a long range planning committee was established and brought back to the church phase 1 of replacing our existing 1300 sq.-ft. fellowship hall with a modern 8000-sq.-ft. multipurpose Family Life Center. In December 2003, at a cost of approximately $550,000 and bringing total facilities to approximately a $1.4-million facility, the Center was completed.
